What is a corneal ulcer?
The cornea is the transparent front surface of the eye. Injury or tissue damage to this surface is called a corneal ulcer. It is a rapidly progressing eye problem that must be taken seriously.
What are the signs?
- Tendency to keep the eye closed
- Heavy tearing
- Sensitivity to light
- Feeling of discomfort in the eye
Causes and the importance of early diagnosis
Corneal ulcers are especially common following trauma and can progress rapidly. Because they can advance to vision loss if untreated, early diagnosis and evaluation by a veterinarian or ophthalmologist are important. If you notice eye pain or constant eye closure, seek medical attention without delay.
