A cataract is a common eye disease caused by the lens of the eye losing its transparency, progressively affecting vision. It is most often noticed as a whitish or cloudy appearance in the eye and, as it advances, reduces vision quality. What is a cataract?
A cataract is the clouding of the lens of the eye as it loses its transparency. When the lens loses clarity, insufficient light reaches the inside of the eye and vision gradually diminishes. In advanced stages, it can progress to complete vision loss.

Causes
Cataracts usually develop as a result of aging. That said, age is not the only cause:
- Aging (age-related cataract)
- Genetic (hereditary) predisposition
- Eye trauma
- Certain health conditions
Treatment and the importance of early diagnosis
The treatment of cataracts, just as in humans, is operative — that is, surgical. Early diagnosis and regular eye check-ups are important for monitoring the progression of the disease and being able to intervene at the right time.
