What is conjunctivitis?
Conjunctivitis is inflammation of the membrane (conjunctiva) that covers the front surface of the eye and the inner eyelids. It is also commonly known as pink eye and is frequently seen in cats.
What are the signs?
- Eye redness
- Eye discharge
- Increased blinking
- Squinting
Common causes
Conjunctivitis in cats is particularly associated with viral infections and is therefore more commonly seen in kittens and immunocompromised cats. If not recognized early, it can become chronic or progress alongside other eye problems. For this reason, early evaluation is important when redness or discharge is noticed in the eye.
